147th Anniversary New Location 1/2 mile from Town
Battle of Barboursville, Kentucky
September 19, 1861
Welcome to the Battle of Barboursville, Kentucky where the War Between the States claimed its first casualties on both sides. Lt. Robert Powell of the 19th Tenn. Vol. Inf. C.S.A. (first Confederate Officer killed on Kentucky soil.) also Pvt. John Hendrickson of the Barboursville Home Guard U.S. died defending his home. Barbourville, Ky. as it is now known was sited for two very important reasons, the first armed conflict resulting in deaths of soldiers in both armies. Every third weekend in September the time slips back to that early foggy morning when 30 Barboursville Home Guards took a stand and tried to repel 800 advancing Confederate troops attempting to destroy Camp Andy Johnson a Union recruiting camp located in the city. The home guardsmen heard the approaching army and removed planks from the bridge leading into town, they fired their muskets into the fog and the conflict began.

September 13& 14, 2008 Admission for the event is $ 2. per person, children under 6 free

We are people to whom the past is forever speaking. We listen to it because we cannot help ourselves, for the past speaks to us with many voices. Far out of that dark nowhere, which is the time before we were born, men and women who were flesh of our flesh and bone of our bone, went through fire and storm to break a path to the future.
